Selectmen Won't Renew Police Chief's Contract
Board of Selectmen · Meeting of September 8, 2026
Middleton selectmen vote not to renew police chief's contract, then clash with a DoubleTree hotel over a removed Narcan box. The board terminated Police Chief William Sampson's contract effective June 30, 2027, citing notice requirements, without public discussion of a reason. Finance Director Sarah Wood reported $6.1 million in certified free cash for fiscal 2026 and said the town will recover about $800,000 from an overbudgeted arbitrage payment.
Town Administrator Justin won approval for 2 percent fiscal 2028 budget guidance, warning "an override is a very real possibility this year." A selectman identified only as Brian tabled Ambridge Hospitality Holdings' DoubleTree officer-change license until September 29, telling the company's representatives a town-provided Narcan box it removed had saved "two individuals' lives." The board also approved a $173,673 municipal complex change order and authorized disposal of surplus town property.
