Select Board Names Armitage Acting Police Chief
Board of Selectmen · Meeting of August 12, 2026
Middleton Select Board unanimously installs Capt. Matthew Armitage as acting police chief. The board voted 5-0 by roll call to enter executive session before appointing Armitage effective August 12, 2026, "until the time that the chief is available and able to return to full duty," with the sitting chief currently unable to perform his role.
Members also unanimously directed the town administrator to negotiate an amended memorandum of understanding with Armitage. He was sworn in immediately after, with the oath administered by a town official identified only as Eileen, binding him to "faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all the duties and responsibilities" of the office. The board then voted 5-0 to enter a second, non-returning executive session covering the chief's contract, the future of the former police station at 65 North Main Street, and release of executive session minutes dating to January 1, 2023.
